Sitaron se Age/Beyond the Stars


beyond the stars are even more worlds

there are still even more tests of passion


these expanses are not devoid of life

here there are hundreds of other caravans too


don't be contented with the world of color and scent

there are other gardens, other nests too


if one nest was lost, what's the (cause of grief)?

there are other places for sighing and lamenting


you are a falcon, flight is your task

before you there are other skies as well


don't become entangled and remain in this day and night

for you have other times and places too


the days are gone when I was alone in the gathering

here, now, I have other secret-sharers too

Iqbal (1877-1938) is one of the most famous Urdu poets. Just got to know his Sare Jahan Se Accha is a ghazal! He has a wide ouevre, ranging from rallying cries to poems for the beloved. He even studied in England!

I read the original Urdu version and realised that some of the lines had been used in the lyrics for Pakistani rock band Junoon's song "Khudi ko kar buland itna (teri raza kya hai?)". Really talented poet who's poetry cuts across generations!


I don't know if you know this already...but Allama Iqbal (as he is also known) is considered one of the founding fathers of the idea of Pakistan. He composed Saare Jahaan Se Accha, but soon got disillusioned with the idea of a United India - that made him champion the cause of a separate state for Muslims.
