Forgetting

For the history exam

everything I would learn by heart,

but would always forget

the dates.

I forget now almost

everything

but remember

only the dates.

This poem by Gulfisha Fatima is heartwrenching. I too forgot dates in school, they seemed boring, meaningless. Of course, for a prisoner, those very dates are a countdown to freedom. Or not.
